The morning is flat, the evening is the fastest window of the day and the slowdown is concentrated between 2:00 and 5:00 PM. From 3:00 PM the fastest route joins SH-71 via TX-183 instead of through central Austin, about 3 miles shorter, but it does not escape the afternoon delay.\n\n## When to leave\n\nAny start between 5:00 and 10:00 AM is within a few minutes of the best morning time, so you can sleep in a little. If you are leaving after work, hold off until 7:00 PM. The drive is then nearly half an hour quicker than at 4:00 PM.\n\n## Other ways to go\n\n\u003C!-- modes -->\n\nThere is no direct passenger train between the two cities, and the long-planned Texas high-speed rail line is stalled. It was only ever going to link Dallas and Houston anyway.\n\nThe bus is the practical alternative. FlixBus runs about eight trips a day, with the fastest at 2 hr 45 min and fares from around $28. Austin stops include Downtown on E 9th St and the Eastside Bus Plaza; in Houston, buses stop on Gray St downtown and at the Harrisburg Blvd station. Greyhound sells the route too. Vonlane added a premium coach between Austin and The Woodlands in 2026.\n\nUnited flies AUS-IAH about eight times a day and Southwest flies to Hobby, both taking about an hour and a quarter. Those seats mostly carry connecting passengers. For a trip into Houston itself, driving wins.\n\n## Parking in downtown Houston\n\nStreet meters run Monday to Saturday, 7:00 AM-6:00 PM, and are free on Sundays and city holidays. Near the George R. Brown Convention Center, the Avenida North Garage posted a $42 daily maximum when we checked, and event nights cost more. For Astros games at Daikin Park (formerly Minute Maid Park), the team sells prepaid parking through SpotHero.\n\n## On the road\n\nThe Buc-ee's in Bastrop, right on SH-71, is the classic stop on this route. There are others at Katy on I-10, and at Waller and Cypress if you take US-290 instead. Approaching Houston, the Katy Managed Lanes on I-10 need an EZ TAG or TxTag. Carpools ride free at weekday peak times, and solo drivers pay a toll that rises with demand.\n\nPlanning another trip?
