Friday on this corridor has two easy windows, early morning and late evening, with a long afternoon peak in between that adds more than an hour. The usual fastest route, shown on the map, follows I‑95 into Connecticut before cutting north through Hartford to the Mass Pike. From 2:00 to 4:00 PM the forecast's fastest route skipped the Connecticut coast altogether, heading north on I‑684 toward Danbury and I‑84 instead. That is up to 15 miles longer but still quicker in heavy traffic.

When to leave

Any start before 10:00 AM lands within ten minutes of a 5:00 AM start, so there is no need for a dawn alarm. If the morning gets away from you, do not split the difference with a 2:00 or 3:00 PM start. Wait until 7:00 PM or later, when the drive drops back under 3 hr 45 min.

Other ways to go

  • Drive3 hr 27 min - 4 hr 42 minFastest early or late
  • Train~3 hr 30 minAcela to Back Bay / South Station
  • Fly~1 hr 20 min gate to gateLGA-BOS shuttles
  • Busfrom $14Peter Pan, Port Authority-South Station

On this route the train is a real competitor. The fastest Acela takes about three and a half hours from Penn Station to Boston, the same as the best drive, and you arrive at Back Bay or South Station with no parking to find. The NextGen Acela trains that entered service in August 2025 are faster and have more seats. Northeast Regional trains take longer but cost less.

Delta Shuttle runs up to 16 LaGuardia-Logan flights a day each way, and American flies the route too. Flights are scheduled at about 1 hr 20 min gate to gate, roughly 45 minutes of it in the air. With airport time at both ends, it rarely beats the train from Midtown. Peter Pan buses leave Port Authority for South Station and Logan, with fares from $14.

Parking in Boston

Most neighborhood streets in Boston are resident permit only, and visitors cannot use them, even with a friend's address. Look for the two-hour visitor spaces, or plan on a garage. Garages near South Station and Back Bay are expensive, so it is worth booking ahead with a parking app if you are staying overnight.

On the road

Most routes out of Manhattan cross the RFK, Throgs Neck or Whitestone bridge. Each costs $7.46 with a New York E-ZPass; drivers with an out-of-state E-ZPass pay the Tolls by Mail rate of $12.03. The Mass Pike is cashless too, and Pay By Plate costs noticeably more than E-ZPass. On I‑95 in Connecticut there are service plazas at Darien, Fairfield, Milford, Branford and Madison.
