If you can be on the road by 6:00 AM, you skip almost all of the Friday build-up and reach Los Angeles around lunchtime. Every hour after that adds a few minutes, and the real penalty arrives mid-afternoon. A 4:00 PM start is the slowest of the day. From that hour, the forecast's fastest route even swaps the usual I‑580 and I‑5 line on the map for US‑101 and CA‑46, about 30 miles longer, and still loses to the morning.

When to leave

Early is the whole strategy here. Leaving at 8:00 or 9:00 AM costs only about a quarter of an hour, so a relaxed breakfast is fine. Waiting until evening does not win the time back the way it does on shorter trips: even at 9:00 PM the drive is still around 20 minutes slower than dawn, and you would arrive after midnight.

Other ways to go

  • Drive5 hr 33 min - 6 hr 46 minFastest before 6 AM
  • Fly~1 hr 30 min in the airSFO-LAX, plus airport time
  • Bus~6 hrGreyhound, FlixBus · from ~$55
  • Train~12 hr 30 minCoast Starlight, once a day

Flying looks like the obvious shortcut. SFO-LAX flights are about an hour and a half, with departures most of the day, and Southwest also flies from Oakland to LAX and Burbank. Once you add getting to the airport, security and crossing Los Angeles at the other end, the saving shrinks. It still beats a Friday afternoon drive.

Greyhound and FlixBus cover the trip in about six hours from downtown San Francisco to Union Station, with fares from around $55 when we checked. The Coast Starlight is the scenic option: one train a day from Emeryville, Oakland and San Jose, taking about twelve and a half hours along the coast. California's high-speed rail line is not running; the current plan targets Merced-Bakersfield service in 2033.

Parking in Los Angeles

If you are continuing by Metro, Union Station East at 1 Gateway Plaza is open 24 hours, charges $8 per day and allows overnight stays. Flying home instead? LAX Economy is an off-terminal lot about a mile from the terminals, with 24-hour shuttles, and costs up to $35 a day if you pay on arrival.

On the road

The Grapevine, where I‑5 climbs over Tejon Pass, can close for hours in winter snow, so check Caltrans QuickMap before you set off between December and March. Tule fog in the Central Valley can cut visibility to a few car lengths on winter mornings. Drive on low beams and resist passing. Kettleman City, roughly halfway, is the natural stop, with fast food, fuel and one of Tesla's largest Supercharger sites.
