Eastbound I‑80 is quiet in the morning and slow all afternoon. On Fridays it also carries weekend traffic heading toward Sacramento and Tahoe. The difference is stark: a 4:00 PM start takes about an hour longer than a morning one, on exactly the same road.

When to leave

Any time before 10:00 AM gives a drive of about an hour and twenty minutes, and you are still in decent shape until around 1:00 PM. From 3:00 to 5:00 PM the trip runs well over two hours. After 7:00 PM it clears quickly, and by 9:00 PM it matches the early morning.

Other ways to go

  • Drive1 hr 16 min - 2 hr 17 minFastest before 10 AM
  • Train~1 hr 48 minCapitol Corridor, 15 a day
  • Bus~1 hr 45 minFlixBus · from ~$15

The Capitol Corridor is the strongest alternative on any Bay Area route. Fifteen trains a day run each way on weekdays (eleven at weekends) from Berkeley to Sacramento Valley Station. The trip takes about 1 hr 48 min, which beats any afternoon drive, and you can work on board. The station is a short walk from Old Sacramento.

FlixBus runs about three trips a day from the UC Berkeley campus to the Sacramento bus station on Richards Blvd. It takes about an hour and three quarters, with fares from around $15.

Parking in Sacramento

Many Sacramento meters run until 10:00 PM and are enforced on Sundays, which catches visitors out; some zones end earlier, so check the meter. Old Sacramento meters run 10:00 AM-10:00 PM. City garages charge $2.25 per half hour. The Capitol and City Hall garages cap at $37 for a weekday daytime stay (6:00 AM-5:00 PM) and $30 at weekends. Old Sacramento Garage is $25 for the day. For big events, garages switch to flat prepaid rates.

On the road

The Carquinez Bridge toll is charged eastbound, so you pay it on this trip: $8.50, collected electronically after you cross. Carpools of three or more with FasTrak Flex pay half at peak times. Further on, the I‑80 Express Lanes in Solano County opened in December 2025 between Red Top Rd and I‑505. They run 5:00 AM-8:00 PM and need FasTrak; with a Flex tag, three or more ride free and two-person carpools pay half.

Caltrans' widening of the Yolo Causeway, which adds an express lane in each direction, was nearing completion in fall 2026. Check QuickMap for any remaining lane closures. In winter, Tule fog around Davis can cut visibility sharply.
