For a 92-mile trip the delay is modest, and almost all of it arrives in one Friday afternoon bump. Outside 3:00 to 6:00 PM you can count on about an hour and a half; at 4:00 PM the same drive runs around a quarter longer.
When to leave
Mornings are interchangeable. Leaving at 10:00 AM instead of 6:00 AM costs about five minutes, so pick whatever suits your day. If you are heading up after work, 7:00 PM is back to the morning time and arrives in Milwaukee around 8:30.
Other ways to go
This is one of the few routes where the train matches the car. The Amtrak Hiawatha takes 1 hr 29 min from Chicago Union Station to Milwaukee Intermodal, the same as the best drive, and it never sits in traffic. It runs seven round trips a day (six on Sunday) and also stops at Milwaukee Airport.
FlixBus and Greyhound run from Union Station and Harrison St to Milwaukee Intermodal, and Wisconsin Coach Lines links O'Hare with Milwaukee if you are coming off a flight.
Parking in Milwaukee
Downtown meters cost $1 to $2.50 an hour, rising to $5 in event zones, and they are free on Sundays and major holidays. Pay with the MKE Park app or ParkMobile. For Brewers games, American Family Field lots are cashless (cameras read your plate) and can be prepaid. Lots open two and a half to three hours before first pitch.
On the road
The Edens Expressway is free, but the I‑94 route north of it uses the Illinois Tollway, so carry an I-PASS or E-ZPass or pay online afterward. In Milwaukee, the I‑94 East-West rebuild started in late 2025 and runs into the 2030s. It includes the Stadium Interchange, so expect lane shifts if you are heading to the ballpark rather than downtown.
