I‑95 between Broward and Miami fills early and stays full. The big jump comes between 6:00 and 7:00 AM; after that the drive holds steady through midday before peaking at the end of the workday.
When to leave
If you can be on I‑95 by 6:00 AM, do it. Miss that window and you are looking at 45 to 49 minutes until early afternoon, which is at least predictable. The 4:00 and 5:00 PM starts are close to an hour. After 8:00 PM the drive falls back to around 40 minutes.
Other ways to go
Brightline is the fastest way downtown. It takes about 33 minutes from Fort Lauderdale station at 101 NW 2nd Ave to MiamiCentral, which beats most drives and avoids Miami parking entirely. Check gobrightline.com for current fares and times.
Tri-Rail is slower, at about an hour, and its Fort Lauderdale station is west of downtown. It does serve both MiamiCentral and the Miami Airport station. Fares rose about 10% in October 2026, and weekend service may be cut if state funding is not restored. The 95 Express buses run to downtown Miami and Brickell from park-and-ride lots in Miramar and Pembroke Pines, not from downtown Fort Lauderdale.
Parking in Miami
Street parking in downtown and Brickell is run by the Miami Parking Authority. Pay with the PayByPhone app and check the posted hours. On Heat game and concert nights, the Kaseya Center garages switch to event rates and close to the public before shows.
On the road
The 95 Express lanes need a SunPass or another Florida-accepted transponder. Registered carpools of three or more ride free. Tolls change with traffic and are posted before each entrance. From June to September, afternoon downpours can slow I‑95 far more than any forecast shows.
