The drive to Miami International is short for most of the day: about ten minutes from downtown until early afternoon. Traffic on the Dolphin Expressway starts building around 3:00 PM, and by 4:00 to 5:00 PM the drive takes roughly twice as long. On a flight day, the bigger variables are parking, drop-off and security, not the road.
When to leave
Before 2:00 PM, allow about ten minutes for the drive. From 3:00 to 6:00 PM, allow closer to 20, and add that on top of your usual airport buffer. Airlines generally recommend arriving two hours before a domestic flight and three before an international one.
Other ways to go
Metrorail's Orange Line runs from Government Center or Brickell to Miami Airport station for $2.25, avoiding 836 traffic entirely. From there, the free MIA Mover carries you to the terminal, arriving on the third level between the Dolphin and Flamingo garages.
A taxi or rideshare is the simplest door-to-door option and drops you at Departures. For the trip back, taxis from MIA are metered, with a $15 minimum and a $2 airport fee, and rideshare pickups are at the "Ride App" signs in the Arrivals level median.
Parking at MIA
The Dolphin and Flamingo garages, right at the terminal, charge $2 per 20 minutes up to $25 a day. For anything longer than a day trip, the Economy Park-and-Ride at 1350 NW 45 Ave caps at $12 a day, with a shuttle to the terminal. Picking someone up? The free cell phone lot at LeJeune Rd and NW 31 St lets you wait until they call.
On the road
Tolls on FL‑836 are cashless. Without a SunPass you are billed by plate at about double the SunPass rate.
